Vintech X81, with Neve 1081 eq points. Modified

Closed down my studio in October (bushwick studio). These are for sale locally and to old clients, so may be gone quickly. I loved the class A Neve amp sound and the versatility of the EQ. And the price was a fair bit better than 1073's, 31102, 1084, etc.

After years of using gear and becoming more intimate with it through all types of situations, I realized that there were a few things I would enjoy correcting if I could. The biggest deal was how when engaging the EQ, the low mids plumped up more than I wanted. Its a nice thick sound but I already enjoyed enough of that with the Pre's as they were. So talking with Dallas we discussed the issue and came up with a solution, in short, there was an extra and unneeded amplifier in the EQ section, if a relay could be added at the output of the unit.

The solution was to bypass the extra amp, and add the relay and voila, the extra bit of low mid push was gone. After modding a pair and A/B'ing, we modded the other 12. The other mods are thus.

As per Dallas' instruction, the voltage to the MicPre's amp was increased to a small degree, enriching the mic pre's sound further. A few capacitors were added to the top end to add a very slight roll off to the High and High Mid eq bands. This allows a smoother sound for digital recording. As the X81 ships, the'off' setting for the EQ is opposite the'off' setting for 48v and phase.

The amplifier bypass mod, including addition of relay at the output. The results of the mods are fantastic and the units were used in this shape for over five years like this.

Should anyone want to undo any of this, all of these mods are easily undoable, but I don't think you will want to. Also, you can talk with Dallas about the mods if you so desire and he can verify this stuff for you. Thanks for checkin them out. These are fabulous and sound amazing. Removed one amplifier from EQ circuit for cleaner midrange when engaged. Added relay at output for EQ to keep polarity correct after amp removal. Modified EQ to have tiny roll off at extreme top end when engaged. Slight mod to amplifier gain as per Dallas experiments. Mod polarity switch so nominal is same as 48v and EQ engage. Recently brought 4 to tracking session and these were picked for vocals over racked original 1272's. The item "Vintech X81, with Neve 1081 eq points.
