Up for sale is a circa 1967-68 Gretsch Round Badge bop kit, in sizes 18-12-14, 5.5. This set was originally owned by jazz drummer Ron Davis, a phenomenal player who was based out of Rochester, NY, and who performed with many jazz greats, including Sarah Vaughan, Doc Severinsen, and Chuck Mangione. Ron most likely custom ordered these from Gretsch, and they have a very special, completely original, one-off factory Gretsch finish. The wrap is very similar to Copper Mist, in that it is a clear wrap with colored lacquer sprayed over it.
The color is a lovely Chocolate Brown, and looks more brown or reddish depending on the lighting and angle. If you are reading this ad, you likely know how unbelievably rare and special this set is.
I used to run a business called "Classic Vintage Drums, " and bought these drums around 2007, through a friend of then-owner Joe LaBarbera, who had acquired them in the 1990s. I immediately fell in love with the sound, and used these for most of my youtube cymbal demos, for several years. Now, I'm hoping that someone else can play and enjoy them. These are truly a piece of Gretsch AND jazz history. All drums are 6 ply, BD hoops are the original, thick 3 ply RB hoops.Toms and snare have paper tags with 93xxx serial numbers, dating to approximately 1967-68. Toms and snare have old, clear lacquer on the interiors, which a lot of drummers did back then to bring out the tone.
I had one of Elvin's RB kits several years ago, and it had the same interior lacquer (and also sang beautifully). No tag in bass drum, doesn't appear to have ever had one.
This is an original, factory matched 18-12-14 bop set, with added lacquer inside three of the drums. Lots of use wear, with loss to the finish in places, especially on one panel of the small tom where it rubbed against the snare. As was hip to do back in the day, Ron played these with the mufflers facing out, so the wear is on the "front" of the tom. Front bass drum Gretsch logo head is an original from the 1960s, but not original to this set. It has ghosted residue of an old name/logo.All of the other heads are exactly what was on the kit, when I got them from Joe. I never wanted to touch or change a thing. Chrome has some pitting and loss, and chrome and wrap are dirty. Could use a good cleaning, but again, I never wanted to touch these and enjoyed them as-found.
Please zoom-in and study all photos. Sizes are 14x18, 8x12, 14x14, and 5.5x14. Snare has a Lightning throw, with typical 1st gen Lightning wonkiness.
To hear Ron playing these, we recommend checking out "The Chuck Mangione Quartet, " especially the track "Land of Make Believe". Easy to find on youtube. Ron is pictured playing this kit, on the back of the record, which we have shown in the photos. If you'd like to hear me playing the kit, check out my old youtube channel, "classicvintagedrums".
Really, there's tons of them up there, with these drums. I even demo'd one of Ron's old Ks along with the kit, which shouldn't be hard to find.
Please feel free to contact me if you have trouble finding them. Feel free to make any offer, you won't hurt my feelings.
I usually "block" buyers who submit really low offers, just to save myself headaches later on. Snare stand and rug not included.
