This is an extremely early serial numbered series 1, first year 1954 Selmer Mark VI. This is serial number #55,798!! This is one of the first 600 Mark VIs ever made!!
Besides tenor saxophones Selmer was also making Mark VI alto, soprano, bari, sopranino, etc Accounting for the fact that many altos were made within those for 600 horns that puts this horn in the group of one of the first Mark VI TENORS ever made!!! Overall this is really just an exciting horn I can barley keep my cool on it! Out of those first group of tenors around, many of them have been lost, destroyed, locked away in attics, re lacquered trashed condition, missing parts, non original serial neck and all sorts of other trashy horn combos we see pop up on the regular So what were left with is this final group of very early early early series 1 55xxx Mark VI tenors that are original lacquer in great presentable condition! There really can only be a handful of saxophones left of this condition and nature floating around. This saxophone is in undeniably original lacquer. This lacquer on this saxophone is BEAUTIFUL! It has that early Mark VI look to it that only a hand made horn from this era can look like! The horn is patinad through out and the lacquer has darkened to give that dark chocolate, honey gold, shimmery sparkly 5 digit Selmer look to it!
The engraving on this horn is over the top, highly detailed ornate floral engraving that sprawls all the way down to the bow. This is the very first Mark VI engraving pattern. Not long after this horn was made Selmer changes the engraving pattern to the typical Mark VI engraving as we know it. This is the rarest engraving to find on a horn and the most elusive and desirable!!The engraving is extremely deep, and can be felt to the touch. Im a huge fan of engraving on saxophones and the engraving on this sax just pops off so so hard its difficult to keep my composure around this horn.
This is no stock mid age Mark VI, this is first engraving pattern VI with engraving ALL OVER THE BELL!!! The engraving is sprawling and just so over the top beautiful!! This saxophone has a very rare matching serial number #55, xxx neck with it.
This is the elusive Double S neck. Typically a Mark VI neck has 1 single S for Selmer right on the neck. The very earliest mark VIs actually had a completely different logo on the neck which is known as the double S neck. Its actually an S and C for Selmer et Cie.
Not long after production on the Mark VI started Selmer stopped producing the double S neck and that was that, over and done and they kept it the same for the rent of the run. Being theres really just so few of these out there this has really led to collectors hyping these up and hoarding them! There near impossible to get your hands on. This saxophone has just had the most lavish high end full mechanical overall and pad job!
I personally picked this saxophone up from the tech and shop that completed the work. The tech that has completed the work is one of Los Angeles BEST sax repair man and is a complete sax nerd. He has spent years obsessing and studying over every little detail regarding saxophones, woodwinds, Selmer, Mark VIs etc.
This is not any kind of run of the mill overhaul. This is a very expensive, extremely detail oriented job. The sax was overhauled in high end milk chocolate tinted pads with the metal resonators we all want! This saxophone is FULLY SEALING! Every single key is perfectly seated and sealing like out of a dream. There are no clicks, clanks, metal on metal noises on this horn. This horn is fully maxed out. The action on this horn is a dream! Every key pops down and seals on its tone hole perfectly. Many of these old saxophones have a horrible old smell to them. The techs go and change the pads to make it playable but never give it attention to clean it. This sax has been 100% dissembled and cleaned from the bone up. There is no smell or vintage odor to this sax!! The saxophone has a very sturdy feel to it. The sax it self it thick, burly, heavy duty metal. But when your holding the sax playing it gripping on the keys the sax is unbelievably sturdy. There is no lateral motion to the keys or rods, there are no weak points.
If you have felt a fresh new overhaul by a great tech you no what Im talking about! Theres no motion in the ocean on this horn its just 100% fully mechanically there.Theres no guessing on this horn! Whatever you want this horn to do, it will do. This is not a mint saxophone, however its in very good condition for being 60+ years old. Please understand this saxophone has its fair share of scratches, knicks, dings, fleabites, metal wear, patina, various aging colors, weld marks, repair marks and other anomalies associated with a used horn of this nature.
The bow area on the saxophone appears to have had some kind of dent taken out, the body tube around the neck strap ring has a patina patch. The ages of this being a problem are gone. Ive posted many pictures of this please check it out! The tech has done an amazing job here and one wouldnt even notice it without being disclosed. The area on the neck, next to the cork on the top side of the neck is where it was. There is no leak here what so ever, there is no edge or lip to the repair what so ever. The area is smooth and flat with no noticeable feel on the finger as you run across it, it feels absolutely perfect and flawless. I have included 10 to 15 pictures of this area from every angle of this. Overall the saxophone is very structurally sound and feels stronger then any modern Yamaha, Selmer or other brand horn you could find. Its very hard to find a good tech that does amazing work. These next level techs are few and far between.
Once you locate a tech of this caliber you need to get them to accept you work. Many techs are months and months if not years beyond on work.
Usually a saxophone will set on a techs bench for an extremely long time before its even started, then take a very long time to finish. This horn is ready to rock, fully overhauled no time waiting or work required on your side. If you have been thinking about investing in a high end early Selmer this is the horn!!!! These horns are only going up in value and have proved throughout ever economy to stand tall and continue raising in value. There is no horn currently on the market that compares to this horn. This horn is a perfect storm! The combination of extremely early serial number, rare engraving pattern, double S neck, and being fully overhauled is amazing!!!
