Built in 2004 and gently and occasionally used. Like new except for a few very minor defects, which I will honestly describe here. There is a noticeable pick scratch near the edge of the top, above the sound hole. There is minor scuffing on the back where the guitar contacts the body, but no bad belt buckle marks. Neither of these are visible in the photos. You have to look real close to notice either.
There are two small dents on the end of the headstock. This can be seen real well in the last photo, and is the worst ding on the whole guitar. I left it on a rocking recliner with the headstock extending out over the back, and my cat jumped on the chair.
This rocked the chair and the guitar contacted the corner of a wall behind the chair... The frets show virtually no wear. The neck is almost perfectly straight but it has very slight relief (outward curve).
This could be adjusted if desired with a little truss rod adjustment to bring the strings a little closer to the neck if desired. I wouldn't change it though because it plays beautifully as it is, The action is very nice for bluegrass. This guitar has an amazing sound. I believe it has a unique sound among D-28's because if the grain on the sides.I have never seen another one with curved grain on the sides, as can be seen in several of the photos. This really sets this guitar apart from the average D-28. Includes original bill of sale, owners (care and feeding) manual, and even the tags that were on both the guitar and the case. The case is like new. I have been keeping the guitar on a wall hanger to expose it to all the sound vibrations and various changes in temperature and humidity in my living room. I believe this has done a lot to season the wood and nicely age the guitar.
That new guitar smell is all gone now and it has a little dust inside, but the sound is second to none, even with the old strings on it. Thanks for looking and taking the time to read a little about the history of this exceptional Martin D-28. I love this guitar and hate to part with it. The D-28 is the Dreadnought by which all others are judged. Constructed of solid East Indian rosewood back and sides, Sitka spruce top and mahogany neck, this instrument has been a favorite of artists from Hank Williams Sr.Massive bass response balanced with articulate highs makes this a benchmark acoustic guitar and a must-have for every guitarist. Perfect for the intermediate and advanced player. I stated that there was glue joint separation at the edge of the bridge and at the heel of the neck in my answer to the question below. I was unaware of these separations till I checked with a piece of paper, as suggested by the knowledgeable guitar dealer who asked the questions. These separations were not structural weaknesses, but they were places where moisture could possibly get in, which is not good.
I did use proper glue for the job and no professional could have done it better. It must be in exactly the same condition as it was, and packed the same way.
