Here is possibly the "Holy Grail" of acoustic guitars--A 1898 (Registered 1899) C. Martin 0-21 Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce acoustic guitar. Some people might call this 119 year old Martin the "Holy Grail" of acoustic guitars. It was acquired by a celebrity a couple years ago who was looking for a truly special instrument to record a new record--and he found it in this beautiful vintage Martin 0-21. He also added that this honestly might be the most painful guitar for him to give up, but that it was part of his journey to let go of "things" and not grasp onto them.
With that said, the remaining 10% of his collection would make any serious guitar player weep with envy. So here it is, a guitar that really defies description for us... And we have to concur--this guitar is so incredibly easy to play and sounds fantastic up and down the fretboard. In fact, the owner hasn't changed the strings since he got it because he says the old strings just enhances the depth of its sound.
There's something about the guitar itself that just makes what you play sound like it's supposed to. Aside from being the perfect blues guitar for finger and flat picking, it's equally as full and precise when you strum it.We realize it sounds cliché, but older guitars that are built right just sound better. This is probably hands down one of the BEST guitars we've ever heard or handled. But the bass response is totally surprising for the size and weight. The low end definitely speaks and it just vibrates so sweetly when you play it. The harmonics seem to be built into the wood.
I guess that's why serious guitar artists play music and frequencies through loud speakers into their guitars to "age" them and make the wood more tone sensitive and musical. The high end is definitely not tinny, but warm and full. The 0-21 body focuses its beautiful mid-range and sounds "mastered" when you play it--incredibly balanced. Again, the top is choice Adirondack Spruce and the back and sides are gorgeous and rare Brazilian Rosewood. The ebony fretboard is just a joy to slide around and it feels really full when you hold it. The subtle rounded V-neck is so nice to hold. It reminds us of when we handled one of Clapton's guitars--the similar great feel his slight V-neck had. Gorgeous and subtle genuine abalone fret markers add a really classy finish to this vintage piece. Action is about 2.3 at the twelfth fret--low and high E. The neck is a nice 1 7/8" at the nut and the Waverly "Irish Rose ivory tuners are original and just beautiful. The abalone bridge pegs still sparkle and are just breathtaking--pics don't do this one bit of "bling" justice at all. This deluxe ATA hard case is a very unusual and cool brown with silver sparkle. The guitar was professionally restored some years back by one of the most respected luthiers in the country who has some of the biggest clients in the music business--from folk to rock to pop. Some repairs are visible, but most aren't from even a couple feet away.
For disclosure, the perfectly repaired blemishes include: bonding some small top cracks; filling a small break on the lower bout; reinforcing the sound hole; headstock repair at the volute; replaced bridge plate. The dual pyramid bridge has a tiny crack that runs between the bridge pegs. We had it accessed and got agreement by the original restorer and a local luthier that it isn't anything to worry about, as the old ebony used is incredibly strong, and we were told that messing with it, even for aesthetic reasons, wouldn't be advisable and is not necessary. Every restoration done to the guitar has only made it stronger and reinforced the integrity.
So you can play it with confidence. And we have to firmly say that there is some major mojo in this axe. Of course, the individual player will also help make any instrument sing. But EVERY single person who has picked up this guitar since we received it has simply said, "Wow, " or some variation of Holy _____!And they ever don't want to put it down. Maybe that's all you need to know. We honestly think this masterpiece is fairly priced, based on appraisals and just the overall qualities of the guitar. The owner said that he'll keep the guitar if it doesn't find a good home in a couple months.
