More or less originally a conversion of an old Martin archtop done at Matt Umanov's shop in NYC and made famous by David Bromberg, the M/0000 guitars were favored not only by Bromberg, but also Tom Paxton, Steve Goodman, Arlo Guthrie, Steve Howe and Jorma Kaukonen, among others. They are more comfortable to play than a dreadnaught due to the narrower waist (which sits lower on your knee) and the thinner body, reducing the fulcrum effect on your shoulder. Long prized in performing and recording circles, the larger 0000 or Grand Auditorium shape is combined with the thinner 000 body depth yielding clarity, tonal balance and power that is less prone to stage feedback and also highly useful in the studio. A bit less sustain and a bit more punch - or a greater velocity of sound - which is great when playing with louder instruments in a small setting. Similar to the current M-36, but with a two piece back and more luxurious appointments.
Martin made the M-38 in two separate runs. This is from the initial run made from 1977 to 1997 (the second run began in 2007). This is a standard series production Martin (the neck block has M38 stamped on it, along with the serial number). This one is in Very Good Plus condition. It is not a closet queen, but well cared for.
It has some small dings as you would reasonably expect from a 30 year old guitar, but it's a beauty. The action is 6/64 at the 12th fret (see pics). The bridge is slotted and has unslotted Galalith pins. The saddle is slightly low (see pics), but has been stable for years. The fret wear and fretboard wear are minimal (see pics).
The close grained sitka top is aged to a beautiful shade of pumpkin, with some bear claw and lovely silking. Back and sides are top quality East Indian Rosewood with a chatoyance, or glistening, that I cannot capture in photos. Nickel Waverly tuners have been fitted as well. This is a relisting because I had the year wrong in the prior listing, but could not edit that, so had to relist.
