These basses are quite rare from what I have been told, less than 200 produced during the entire production run from 89-85, not sure if that is right, but this is the only one I can find available for sale anywhere!!! This one is even more rare than usual, as it was signed on the back strip by C F Martin IV on Sept 28 1989, not sure if that adds any value, but it is cool!!
Anyway, this bass does not look like it was played very much, and that is ashamed as it is a KILLER bass, acoustically, and plugged in!!! The sound is very full unplugged on this one, with all the attributes of a really nice Martin, The lows are actually pretty loud, considering its Jumbo 0000 sized body with the depth of a Deadnought, the mids punch through loud and clear, and the treble has great sparkle, and plugged in, the active under the saddle Fishman sounds killer and has lots of tonal adjustment with the mid sweep, tone and volume controls. As for condition, this low mileage instrument is in beautiful shape, there have never been any breaks, cracks or damage, The finish shines like new, with a few tiny extremely light marks here and there from the little use it has had. There is no real play wear at all for the most part. The neck is laser straight, perfect neck angle, the frets and ebony fingerboard look new, with a perfect working trussrod, and it plays amazing. There are 2 minor cosmetic issues, that I tried to take pics of, one, the binding on the back at the treble side waist has pulled away from the body a tiny bit, the other is a discoloration spot on the treble side lower bout, which oddly enough, I saw the same EXACT weird discoloration on the rim of another 1989 B-40, that one though, on the upper bout, which makes me almost think it is/was caused from the actual wood used on both of these B-40s as they were probably made side by side!!! Thats it, other than those 2 minor things, this bass is pretty much as nice as a used 28 year old instrument can be. The woods and trim are pretty much what you would see on a contemporary D-28, solid Indian rosewood on the back and sides, solid spruce top with semi scalloped bracing, one piece mahogany neck (this one actually has some light flame figure in the mahogany), rosewood head plate, and perfectly black genuine Ebony fingerboard and bridge. P lease look at all the pics and ask any questions you may have. If you need to see more pics, let me know of what.
