1971 Fender Precision Bass Fretless Maple Fretboard Vintage Bass One Owner

Up for sale, a 1971 Fender Precision Bass with a very rare factory fretless maple fretboard. A one-owner instrument that's been lovingly played for decades, this P Bass delivers rich fundamental thump and articulate growl. The maple fretboard keeps the top end present and clear, and the solid alder body has a balanced frequency response across all four strings. The instrument is acoustically resonant, balancing very well on a strap and weighing only 8lbs 8oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, this bass is strung with fresh 45-105 DR flatwound strings and dialed in for optimal action.

The fretless maple neck is a particularly rare factory option, and the fretboard is a highly figured piece of maple further highlighted by the original gloss finish. The neck has a round and chunky C shaped profile with generous shoulders and Fender's traditional 34 scale length.

The nut measures just a hair under 1 5/8 in width. On the headstock, the stock Fender-stamped chrome tuners with clover buttons are intact, turn smoothly, and hold pitch well. On the neck heel, the original green ink date stamp is faintly visible, particularly the part reading "71 B" for the year and nut width.

The alder body has its original gloss three-tone sunburst finish, and much of the red ring of the burst has faded, giving the instrument an almost two-tone appearance. The body features both a new chrome Fender vintage reissue bridge and a genuine nitrate tortoise pickguard furnished by Pickguardian.

This guard perfectly matches the edge bevel, material, and screw hole pattern of the original guard. Cosmetically, this bass shows plenty of honest wear from decades of gigging, yet is structurally sound. The bass has heavy checking in the original gloss finish with various nicks and dings and finish wear down to the bare alder around the edges of the contoured body. The neck profile has a bit of light chatter and faint wear down to the bare maple on the treble side of the board, but none of this distracts the hand while playing. This is a well loved, professionally setup, and rare'71 Precision Bass with a fretless maple board.
