1964 Martin D-28
THIS GUITAR HAS SEEN A LOT OF CHANGES DURING ITS LIFETIME. I'LL TRY TO LIST THEM ALL, BUT I'M NOT A LUTHIER SO PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS. I HAVE MANY MORE PICTURES THAT I CAN SEND YOU.

IT WAS NOT DONE MY THE MARTIN FACTORY. THE PREVIOUS OWNER SAID IT WAS REPLACED BY A LUTHIER IN NEW YORK IN THE 1970'S. I CAN'T VERIFY THIS, BUT THE WORK APPEARS TO BE OLD, SO IT MAY WELL BE TRUE.

THE TOP IS SPRUCE, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT KIND. THE GRAIN LOOKS TOO TIGHT TO BE SITKA SPRUCE, LOOKS MORE LIKE EUROPEAN OR ENGLEMANN TO ME. IF YOU CAN TELL THE AGE OF THE TREE THE TOP CAME FROM BY COUNTING THE LINES ON ONE HALF OF THE TOP, LOOKS TO ME LIKE THE TREE COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN 120+ YEARS OLD. TOP HAS SOME CRACKS IN IT AS CAN BE SEEN IN THE PICTURES. 2 CRACKS ALONG THE UPPER BOUT BASS SIDE, A CRACK ALONG THE FRETBOARD ON THE BASS SIDE RUNNING FROM THE SOUNDHOLE TO THE EDGE WHERE THE NECK JOINS THE TOP.

A CRACK RUNNING PARALLEL TO THE STRINGS PAST THE BASS SIDE OF THE BRIDGE. A CHUNK HAS BEEN TAKEN OUT OF THE ROSETTE BY THE PICKGUARD AND POORLY REPAIRED AND CLEATED. I'M NOT SURE IF THE TOP BRACING IS ORIGINAL OR NOT. THERE IS SOME BELLYING BEHIND THE BRIDGE AND SOME SINKAGE BETWEEN THE BRIDGE AND THE SOUNDHOLE. I'M NOT SURE WHAT KIND OF WOOD IT IS, POSSIBLY ROSEWOOD. THE FRETBOARD HAS BEEN EXTENDED FROM THE 20TH FRET, THROUGH THE 21ST FRET AND TO THE SOUNDHOLE. SADDLE IS LOW AND ACTION MEDIUM/HIGH, SO THE GUITAR COULD DEFINITELY USE A NECK RESET IN MY OPINION. NECK IS PRETTY STRAIGHT WITH SOME SLIGHT RELIEF UNDER THE FIRST 5 OR 6 FRETS.

FRETBOARD IS CRACKED ALL THE WAY THROUGH AT THE 14TH FRET. IT MAY HAVE HAPPENED WHEN THE TOP WAS REPLACED. THE 13TH FRET HAS DEAD SPOTS BECAUSE THE 14TH FRET SETS TOO HIGH DUE TO THE CRACK. ALL OF THE SIDE DOTS ON THE FRETBOARD ARE GONE EXCEPT FOR THE 3RD FRET. A STRAP BUTTON HAS BEEN ADDED ON THE BODY BASS SIDE OF THE NECK HEEL.

PICKGUARD IS NOT ORIGINAL AND IS NOT CORRECT FOR A DREAD (OBVIOUSLY). THE BRIDGE MAY NOT BE SET IN THE RIGHT PLACE AS THE STRINGS HAVE A SLIGHT BIAS TO THE BASS SIDE OF THE NECK. IT COULD ALSO BE THE RESULT OF THE TOP CRACK THAT RUNS ALONG THE FRETBOARD TO THE SOUNDHOLE.

IT HAS NOT BOTHERED ME AT ALL WHEN PLAYING AND COULD BE CURED IF THE NECK WAS RESET. GUITAR HAS BEEN REFRETTED AT LEAST ONCE.

THE CURRENT FRETS HAVE LOTS OF MEAT ON THEM. THE TOP BINDING HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH ROSEWOOD BRAZILIAN? BINDING OVER A RED STRIP. THERE ARE AT LEAST 2 CRACKS IN THE BRAZILIAN ON THE BACK, BUT THEY ARE TIGHT AND DO NOT LOOK SERIOUS TO ME. SIDES APPEAR TO BE CRACK-FREE.

THERE MAY BE ADDITIONAL ISSUES THAT I'M NOT AWARE OF WHICH ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS DESCRIPTION. NOW, AFTER ALL OF THAT, HERE'S THE UPSHOT.

GUITAR HAS BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD BACK AND SIDES. REALLY NICE GRAIN ON THE BACK.

NO BREAKS IN THE NECK OR HEADSTOCK. FRETBOARD APPEARS TO BE ORIGINAL, AT LEAST TO THE 20TH FRET. ORIGINAL PATENT PENDING GROVER TUNERS WORK FINE. THIS IS DEFINITELY A PLAYER'S GRADE MARTIN.

AS SUCH, YOU COULD JUST SHAVE THE BRIDGE DOWN A BIT, FILE DOWN THE 14TH FRET, LET THE ROUGH EDGES DRAG AND HAVE AN AWESOME VINTAGE SOUNDING MARTIN DREAD FOR A FRACTION OF THE PRICE OF AN ALL ORIGINAL GUITAR. OR YOU COULD GO THE WHOLE 9 YARDS, REPLACE THE TOP, RESET THE NECK, ETC. A FEW YEARS BACK MARTIN OFFERED A PACKAGE DEAL WHERE THEY WOULD RE-TOP A GUITAR, RESET THE NECK, AND DO ALL OF THE ASSOCIATED WORK FOR A PACKAGE PRICE.

I'M NOT SURE IF THEY STILL OFFER THIS, BUT YOU COULD ALWAYS CALL THEM AND ASK. The item "1964 Martin D-28" is in sale since Monday, January 02, 2017. This item is in the category "Musical Instruments & Gear\Guitars & Basses\Acoustic Guitars".
