The instrument has received all of the maintenance due a dreadnought of this vintage and the work was expertly done, including a neck reset, complete refret, hand-carved bone nut, and bone saddle. The new fretwire is a close match with vintage measurements, with the correct width and height. Currently strung with fresh phosphor bronze 12-53 strings, this D-28 demonstrates why this model is the benchmark for dreadnought guitar tone.
The neck profile has a deep soft V shape with l. The guitar conforms to traditional Martin spec with a 1 11/16" nut and 25.4" scale. On the headstock face, the Brazilian rosewood veneer is in great shape, retaining the original Martin logo which is exceptionally clean. The nickel Kluson Deluxe "no line" tuning machines have clean plating, turning smoothly and holding pitch as they should. The original ebony bridge sits flush with the top too, with sparingly little bellying of the spruce on the lower bout. The new carved bone saddle has plenty of height too. Internally, all of the braces are in fantastic shape, and notably more scalloped and light than later models, giving the guitar the lively and dynamic quality that makes this era of Martin so desirable.
The maple bridge plate was replaced at some point in the guitar's lifetime. The model/serial info is cleanly displayed on the neck heel, and the C. Martin & Co text is stamped along the center seam of the back and visible through the soundhole. Cosmetically, this Martin is a real stunner. The top and sides are crack-free, with o.
Ne cleated bass side back crack near the waist, and a couple smaller, even more slight splits in this area which have been addressed but did not warrant splinting. Trum wear in the pick path, including two tiny splits on the treble side edge of the soundhole which have been addressed and do not extend beyond the middle ring of the rosette.
While the top, headstock face and neck retain the original nitro lacquer finish, the back and sides were purportedly refinished at the Martin factory 30 years ago (confirmation of Martin factory details forthcoming). Ome expected scattered nicks and small marks of wear on the guitar as a whole, and a strap button has been added to the neck heel. Overall, this is a very. Well cared for and expertly maintained example of one of the finest Martin D-28s you're ever likely to play! A vintage, ostensibly original hardshell case with green plush interior is included.
